Her Side
She’s always had
this dream
About buying a
boutique since way back in her teens
And now, she
cooks and she cleans
For a man who
hardly knows her
He’s just an
overstuffed shirt
Doing underpaid
work
And she’s wary of
him as he is weary of her
It’s his tender
side these days he never shows her
It’s getting much
harder now
Everyday she
tries and fails to make ends meet
With the rent
already two weeks behind she knows
She’ll have less
to eat.
Her friends have
drifted away
It’s the bonds
that never break that just chafe and fray
She’d like to
call them up but feels she’s nothing to say
So she dreams
while she lies back on the sofa
He often comes
home late
His dinner cold,
dried on the plate
He hits her then
he leaves to slam the door in his wake
It’s her life she’s
got nothing to show for.
It’s getting much
harder now
But she tells
herself that she really don’t mind a thing
It’s just that
when he comes home drunk she knows
Her troubles
really begin
But she used to
be so beautiful
And now they say
she’s respectable
And she’ll hate
that word for the rest of her life
The rest of her
life?
Well who knows?
