The Inner Wall

Here comes the lady
Decked down in lace and chintz
That shades her pretty face
Snowbird of porcelain
Who treads so soft there's scarce a sound
Like rose petals unfurling in the sun
My breathless sigh as she draws closer
Her fragrance
Here she comes

Here comes the lady
Here comes the lady
Who comes then goes
And never knows
The hurt she puts me through

Her chasten smile
That grips my heart and squeezes
Steals across her face
Then like a snowflake melting in my hands
She's gone
Maybe forever who's to say
Surely not I who never dared to break
This inner wall of mine
That I hide behind

Here comes the lady
Here comes the lady
Who comes then goes
And never knows
The hurt she puts me through

Here comes the lady
Decked down in lace and chintz
